Diarrhea/Vomiting

Yes, we’ve all been there. Diarrhea and/or vomiting,  is our body’s way of eliminating toxins. It’s usually a result of food poisoning or a viral infection. A few simple steps will ensure a quick and uneventful recovery. If your symptoms last longer than 3- 5 days, be sure to contact your physician.

Most important of all is to stay hydrated. Ideally with water, about 6-8 glasses/day Or Gatorade- sip 2-4 oz every hour, even if vomiting.

Start refeeding as soon as possible….2-3 hours after vomiting and continue even if you have diarrhea.

Eat small portions of toast, white rice, crackers, cooked vegetables, fruits, clears, softs like regular jello, puddings, soups, broth. You want to consume simple carbohydrates, so your body can easily absorb the nutrients.

Avoid sugar substitutes, fats and heavy fiber- your body simply won’t be able to digest these.

Avoid soy products, beans and corn- gas producing.

Take Tylenol for fever, avoid Ibuprofen and aleve, too harsh on your stomach.

Call your doctor if you experience the following:

Blood/Mucus in stool

Fainting

Fever, or a second course of fever
